Dorothea Marie "Dot" Downey Martin passed away peacefully at her home on May 25th, 2024.
She was born September 21st, 1936, in Norristown, Pennsylvania. "Dot" or "Dottie" as she was known by her beloved friends, and "Tootie" or "Aunt Toot" as many in the neighborhood knew her was the first of three daughters, Dorothea, Dolores and Joan, born to Francis John Downey and Julia Elizabeth Downey, both from Norristown, PA.
Dot leaves behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and a life well lived. She graduated from St. Matthew's High School in Conshohocken, PA in 1954. She worked at Burrough's Corporation for many years and later at the University of Pennsylvania Re-sale Store.
In 1965, Dot married John Martin. They embarked on a life journey together that included welcoming daughter Johna on April 11th, 1965.
Dot had deep interests and passions. She loved tennis, fashion, theater, reading, and travel. She traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe.
Later in life, Dot put herself through school while working full time. She earned a bachelor's degree from Villanova University in 1991 which was one of the proudest accomplishments of her life.
She will be remembered as a wonderful mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend who was always there when needed offering support, wisdom, a razor-sharp wit and love in abundance. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, incredible strength, style and grace.
She is survived by sister Dolores "Cissy" Simanaitis and husband Dan. Nieces, Jennifer Mullin and husband Rick Stelmach and their children, Rebecca and Xavier. Susan Marcou and husband David and their son Matthew. Nephews, Paul Mullin, Thomas Mullin and his children, Tommy, Samantha and Nicole, nephew Dan Simanaitis and his wife Susan.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband John, her daughter Johna, sister Joan and her best friend and companion of many years, Gabe Chang.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30th, 2024 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norristown, PA. A viewing will be held at 10 am followed by mass at 11 am.
A luncheon will be held at 12:15 pm, at the
Home of Gary and Kelly Norton
