Edward “Ed” F. Hartman passed away peacefully at home on December 5, 2021 at the age of 91. He was born on May 17, 1930, in Norristown, PA, and was the
beloved son of Edward J. and Miriam (Kennedy) Hartman.
He was a loving father to his sons, Chris (Diane) and Pat (Vera), and daughter, Ann (Adrian); loving grandfather to Christopher (Emily), Nicole (Steve), Irina (Josh), Olivia and Mia; loving great-grandfather to Anthony, Luca, Emma and Vincenzo, and loving brother to Dorothy. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, daughter, Stephanie and sister, Mary Eleanor (“Sis”).
Ed served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years and spent 41 months on the USS Thuban (AKA-19) as a Diesel Engine Operator. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Korean Service Medal.
After serving his country, Ed worked for BFGoodrich in Oaks, PA as an industrial mechanic. He retired when the plant closed after working for the company for 30 years. Not one to sit around, he went to work at Superior Tube in Collegeville, PA until he officially retired in the early 1990s.
Ed was a great father and friend who was always there for whatever was needed. Whether it be his company, a laugh, a ride, or something that needed to be fixed, he was right there. He was also known for his sense of humor, picture taking and his love of planes and trains. He built model airplanes back in the 1970-80s and could be seen flying them at Valley Forge Park. For 3 decades, he traveled every summer to Oshkosh, WI to attend the EEE Air Venture, known as the world’s greatest aviation celebration. His love of planes was surpassed by a new passion, trains. He spent the last 2 decades of his life attending train shows and auctions and spent countless hours at home setting up tracks and refurbishing old trains.
In January of 2020, Ed was diagnosed with cancer and, for almost 2 years, fought a courageous battle. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his family.
Services will be private at the request of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Volpe Funeral Home.
