George Roundtree Obituary

George Roundtree, age 82, died peacefully on Sunday, June 16th, 2024 at Genesis Hopkins Healthcare Center in Wyncote, PA, after a brief illness due to complications from a stroke and COPD. In his final hours, George was comforted and uplifted by the voices of his siblings, a caring nephew and a dear first cousin who each called on him to tell him they loved him and to offer words of support and comfort as he began his journey home to eternal life. George was born on 03 January 1942 in Kathwood, South Carolina, the
second of nine children born to Freddie Miller Roundtree and Lucille
Bryant Roundtree. At an early age George was baptized in Hollow Creek and became a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Jackson. In the late 1950s he joined a gospel quartet, performing on-air during the heyday of Augusta, Georgia’s gospel show, “Parade of Quartets.” George received his early education at Kathwood and in the Aiken County public schools. He was a proud graduate of Martha Schofield High School, Class of 1961.
Shortly after graduation George moved to New York. In 1963, he joined the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, Fort Gordon, GA, Fort Carson, CO, and Fort Lewis, WA before
serving in Vietnam where he attained the rank of sergeant. After his honorable discharge from the service he was a truck driver for many years. George was united in marriage to Miss Shirley Richardson and they made their home in Brooklyn, New York. George later moved to Philadelphia where he retired. George will be
remembered for his ready smile and fun-loving spirit. He was an avid reader and watcher of the news and was always interested in having a conversation about current events. George was preceded in death by his parents, Freddie and Lucille Roundtree; his brothers-in-law,
Bobby Custus, Charlie “Skeet” Parker, and William “Shang” Penn; his sister-in-law, Annabelle Glover Roundtree, and his nephews, Christopher Roundtree and Gabriel Shon Roundtree. He is
survived by his former wife, Shirley; and eight siblings; Sam (Mae Ella) Roundtree, Philadelphia; Mamie Roundtree Parker, Miami, FL, Charlie Roundtree, Brooklyn, NY; Lewis Roundtree, Brooklyn, NY; Sarah Roundtree Penn, Aiken, SC; Carrie Roundtree Custus, Augusta, GA; Freddie Roundtree (Rhonda), New Ellenton, SC and Elmore Roundtree (Alane) Eagan, MN; He was “Uncle George” to 22 nieces and nephews and 39 great nieces and nephews; and also
leaves a host of loving cousins, extended family members and friends. A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Roundtree family plot at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Jackson next to his
parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Dove Hospice for their compassionate care.
