On September 1, 2023, Gertrude Adele Potter passed away peacefully after a brief illness at age 100 at Garden Spot Village, a retirement facility in New Holland, PA.
Gertrude was born on May 7, 1923, in Wilmington, Delaware to Price Knapp Snyder and Myrtis (néePalmer) Snyder. She spent most of her youth in Milton, Delaware. After graduating from Milton High School in 1941 she attended Goldey College (now Goldey Beacom College) earning her associate degree in accounting.
After graduation she worked at Fort Miles in Lewes, Delaware where she met her future husband, Samuel Potter, Jr. They were married in 1944 in Milton, Delaware. After World War 2, the couple moved to Norristown, Pennsylvania, where she lived most of her life. In 2012, she moved to Garden Spot Village.
When Gertrude’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Gertrude was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. Gertrude and her husband served for several decades at the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church in Norristown.
Gertrude is survived by her two sons: Samuel Potter 3rd(Tara Lee) of Ephrata (PA), Jeffrey Potter (MaggieMonk) of Chestertown (MD), six grandchildren, and twenty-eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and three brothers: Francis Snyder, Price K. Snyder, and Arthur Snyder.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, September 6th at 11:00 AM at Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church (https://jeffersonvillepresbyterian.org) with Pastor David Larkin presiding.
