John Scanlan Obituary

John F. Scanlan, of Norristown, age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2024, at his home in Norristown, surrounded by his family. Born in Norristown on Dec. 2, 1935, he was the son of the late Roger and Elizabeth (Deegan) Scanlan. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen (Hunsberger) Scanlan, to whom he was married for 58 years.

John was born, raised, and a lifelong resident of Norristown. He was a 1954 graduate of West Catholic High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  Once discharged from military service, he attended St. Joseph University. John was a devout Catholic and a lifelong parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi in Norristown. Proud of his Irish heritage, he was a member of the AOH Notre Dame Division I in Swedesburg. He was also a member of the Maennechor Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He also enjoyed spending his time traveling and reading. His greatest joy in life was his family. A devoted family man, he cherished every opportunity to spend time with his siblings, his many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. 

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his daughters, Ann Bogdanowicz (Ben), Eileen Monastero (Frank), and son, Daniel Scanlan (Stacy); 9 grandchildren: Ryan (Brittani), Anthony, Jordan, Paige, Emily, Ashley, Parker, Sofia and Stella; 3 great-grandchildren: Hayden, Ryatt and Maysen. He is also survived by his brothers: Robert (Jane) and B. Michael (Susan), and sisters: Kathleen Picozzi (James) and MaryAnn Romberger. He was preceded in death by his brothers and their spouses: Roger (Mary Frances); George; Philip (Constance); William (Sandra) and brother-in-law Floyd Romberger. 

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m.and Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. at the Volpe Funeral Home 707 W. Germantown Pike, Norristown, PA. A Celebration of Life mass will take place at 10:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 601 Buttonwood Street, Norristown.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel of Towers Foundations in John’s memory.
