Michael Sweeney Obituary

After 86 years on this beautiful planet, the charismatic, over dramatic and often sensational Michael J. Sweeney (a.k.a. Michael London), has traded in his dancing shoes for a ticket to forever be part of the endless silver screen hung between the stars in the tapestry of heaven.
Born on October 20th, 1935 in Philadelphia PA to the late Joseph and Helen (Tobin) Sweeney, Michael forged a life for himself most could only dream of having. Growing up, he attended Lasalle University where he became a member of the hard-working crew team, and later used that same vigor to become a proud US Army veteran, medic, and skilled sharp-shooter - serving from 1959-1961. After leaving the military, he dedicated the rest of his life to his passion and pursued the art of dancing, which is how he met the love of his life and soon-to-be wife, Letitia (Leddy) Sweeney. As an instructor, he was patient and inspiring when teaching students in one of his various Fred Astaire studios. He also choreographed impressive dance routines for competitions, weddings and theatrical performances. Eventually, he and Tish were married, bought a house in the heart of Gladwyne, PA and had two adorable children, Michael Christopher, who sadly preceded his father in death, and Kristin Sweeney, who married Peter Kerasavich, and had two lovely children of her own, Daschel and Braxton Kerasavich. On his journey beyond, Michael also left behind his brother Tom who was a large part of his life until the very last moment, as well as several nephews and nieces.

Michael will always be remembered by his family, friends and students as a charming man, who was an avid reader and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of film, dance and history. For most of his life, he lived a glitzy, jet-setter, Hollywood-type lifestyle, being a frequent flyer to clubs, casinos and prestigious opening night events, earning him the nicknames Mr. Wonderful, based upon the song, and The Duke. Though he will be missed by all, he truly is in a better place where he has a first row seat watching us all as we begin our journey navigating a world without him.

A viewing will be held from 10-10:45AM on Friday, September 23rd at St. John Vianney Church in Gladwyne, followed by a mass at 11AM.
