In a heartfelt embrace of family and the comforting whispers of cherished memories, Vesta Osler Mershon departed this world on January 5, 2025, surrounded by the comforting love of her family while in hospice care. Vesta's life was a tapestry of vibrant colors, expressive of her passion for art and the tenacity of spirit she exhibited throughout her 89 years.
Born on April 15, 1935, in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, Vesta was the youngest child of John F. and Vesta Hoffman Osler. Alongside her sister, Estelle Osler Hess, Vesta's childhood was laced with the realities of a world at war. The family moved frequently during those tumultuous years, but the bonds of kinship and shared experiences left an indelible mark on her life.
Vesta's early education at Linden Hall in Lititz, PA, laid the foundation for her intellectual curiosity and pursuit of greater knowledge. Her passion for learning was insatiable, and it naturally led her to the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in English and Architecture. It was here in the stimulating academic environment of the 1950s that she met the love of her life, Don A. Mershon. Their shared dreams and aspirations forged a partnership that would sustain their journey through the many years to come.
Settling in Allentown, PA, Vesta and Don cultivated a warm and inviting home, welcoming three beloved children: Robyn Mershon Cisco, and Jay K. Mershon. Vesta's nurturing spirit and unwavering support were cornerstone virtues that enriched their lives.
Her influence permeated her children's upbringing, fostering a familial culture rooted in kindness, respect, and an enduring belief in the power of prayer and faith—a testament to her stronG convictions.
As a grandmother, Vesta extended her loving embrace to Zakry Cisco, Jill (Mershon) Vida, Kylie (Cisco) Trice, Katrin Mershon, and Eliot Mershon. Her gentle guidance was a beacon of stability and comfort in their lives, a reminder of the indelible impact of legacy and love. Vesta's interests and hobbies were as eclectic as they were profound. A gifted artist, her paintings were an extension of her soul,
capturing the beauty she perceived in the world around her. Beyond the canvas, books were a sanctuary for her inquisitive mind, bridging connections to different worlds and epochs. Her hands, skilled in the language of cards and sudoku, could often be found tending to the flourishing blooms of her garden—a living testament to her touch. Golf was a sport she played with the poise and grace that defined her, and her love for movies offered a shared joy with family and friends.
Vesta's teachings were not merely imparted in word but also by example. She firmly believed in fostering relationships through trust, loyalty, and steadfast communication. Shecultivated longstanding friendships characterized by respect, acceptance and unconditional love—a legacy her friends and family will cherish and uphold.
Three words faithfully describe Vesta’s essence: strong, loyal, and caring. Her strength emanated from a lifetime spent nurturing others and steadfastly upholding her principles. Her loyalty was unwavering, reflected in her marriage to Don, her allegiance to friends, and her steadfast devotion to family. Above all, her caring nature was evident in every facet of her life, endearing her to those lucky enough to know her.
Although Vesta spent much of her life in Allentown, she ultimately resided in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, where she enjoyed her later years, cherishing every moment shared with family and friends. The countless walks she took—each one a journey of contemplation through the tapestry of her memories—were a testament to her appreciation of life's simple pleasures and the beauty that surrounded her.
The family will be hosting a private celebration of her life, a gathering filled with stories, laughter, and memories among close friends and family, those who held Vesta dear. In honor of her legacy and the compassionate heart she carried throughout her life, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Good Shepherd Rehabilitation in Allentown, PA. Vesta's enduring spirit and generous heart will find a fitting tribute in contributions that support the well-being of others—a cause she believed in deeply.
Vesta Osler Mershon's life was an incredible journey, from the humble beginnings in Hazelton to the vibrant heart of Allentown and the peaceful resting years in Blue Bell. Her story reflects an artist and a nurturing matriarch whose life's work was the tapestry of love she wove around her family and community. In remembering Vesta, we celebrate not an end but the enduring legacy of a life richly lived and the eternal beauty of her spirit.
