For Julia/n
Julian and me in the happy crowd belting Iām Gonna Make It Through This Year with the Mountain Goats
Watching Andrei Rublev and Black Orpheus and Red Desert, analyzing them for hours
Introducing me to life-affirming hip-hop, electronic soundscapes, allegorical film noir
To the joy of precise intense creation
Arguing deconstructionism, radical feminism, our responsibility as privileged, as lovers of humanity.
Julian I remember you swinging across the monkey bars with agility and ease
Burying me up to my neck in sand at the shore
Play-wrestling in our basement, you pinning me with a gentle triumphant cry
Enthusiastic and outgoing, with an infectious laugh
Building Legos, sandcastles, dominoes, 1000-piece puzzles, origami
Disassembling and reassembling with equal patience, curiosity and concentration
Walking through the woods in wonder, catching trout in Skippack Creek
Working on Cub Scout projects, cheering with your den-mates and teammates
Playing Beethoven and Nirvana on the piano
Telling stories to your cousins, clowning with them at the playground
Learning to swim, looking at me with trust and as I let you go, kicking confidently, taking off.
In high school growing more serious and deliberative
Yet just as open-minded and curious
Representing Methacton in District French competition
Immersing yourself in programming
Receiving an award for Computer Science innovation.
Off to Cornell for Engineering, excelling
But searching for your identity
Discovering the universe of cultures and art and politics and genders
And hardship and cruelty and self-doubt and despair.
A person of intense interests, passionate and generous,
You took in so much and shared so much with your family and friends
You went out in the world and came back home and left us for good.
Yet you are still with me as I think, and dream and eat and sing
All that you taught me, all our adventures, all your aspirations, your love
Is part of me forever.
Parents be present for your children;
Do not take them for granted.
(Do not take anything for granted.)
Tell them that you love them unconditionally for exactly who they are and who they wish to become.
Take them seriously, and if you think you should act, act now.
Let them know that we all have suffered and you are not alone.
Parents and children, brothers and sisters, friends and lovers
Together we are strong, we can redeem the time and each other
Our love can overcome all.

My heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your wonderfully gifted and brave child. Lisa and I have the family in our prayers and want to support you anyway we can at this difficult time. You may have noticed receiving a condolence from Dr. Ashley Simpson, a person you may not be familiar with. Ashley is a colleague and Early Childhood Education professor at Penn State, with a research specialty in transgender children. We recorded an interview on my Ask the Expert radio show today that will air Sept. 1 at 8:35 am on connectradio.fm. I am going to dedicate the show to JR. Ashley has also made herself available to support you and the family. I have her contact information if you would want to reach out to her. I have also saved the audio file of our interview for future reference, if you would want it.

I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your precious child. I cannot imagine how hard this time is for you. It is difficult when a light that burned so brightly is extinguished, but that light impacted so many, and now it lives on in you. I am thinking of you and sending warm and healing wishes, hoping that you are cloaked in comfort remembering better days.
